Supplier Program Manager(China)

Engineering Shanghai, China

Description

Position at Samtec, Inc

Job Title: SUPPLIER PROGRAM MANAGER (CHINA)
Objective:
Manage and scale suppliers in China to meet aggressive growth, quality, and cost targets. Focus on optimizing supplier performance, increasing capacity, improving processes, and integrating advanced manufacturing technologies to support current and future product needs. While secondary, identify and onboard new suppliers when gaps exist. Collaborate closely with Engineering, Sourcing, and Operations teams to drive supplier development, strengthen partnerships, and ensure seamless communication between China-based suppliers and global stakeholders.
Essential Functions / Responsibilities:
  • Partner with Engineering, Sourcing, and Operations to assess and strengthen existing supplier capabilities in China against current production needs and the product roadmap, with primary emphasis on scaling output, yield, quality, and cost competitiveness.
  • Lead supplier scaling initiatives: drive capacity expansion, process optimization, yield improvements, automation integration, and cost reduction programs at existing vendors.
  • Identify and assess potential new suppliers in China when necessary to fill critical capability or capacity gaps (secondary focus).
  • Conduct supplier visits, capability assessments, performance reviews, and development planning with a strong focus on technical manufacturing processes.
  • Work with Sourcing and Supplier Quality to onboard any new suppliers, monitor initial project performance, and rapidly close gaps through structured development plans.
  • Facilitate clear and timely communication between China-based suppliers and global engineering/operations teams, including participation in meetings across time zones (with interpretation support as needed).
  • Track supplier performance metrics (on-time delivery, quality, cost, capacity), manage contracts, purchase orders, and escalation of issues or risks to leadership.
  • Identify project and supply risks early, develop mitigation plans, and drive corrective actions.
  • Create regular reports and status updates on supplier performance, scaling progress, and risks for management review.
“The responsibilities as defined are intended to serve as a general guideline for this position. Associates may be asked to perform additional tasks depending on strengths and capabilities.”
Required Experience:
  1. Strong interpersonal, negotiation, influence, and project management skills with proven ability to drive results at supplier sites.
  2. 5+ years of experience in supplier management, technical procurement, or supply chain engineering, with a heavy emphasis on scaling and developing suppliers rather than pure new sourcing.
  3. Deep business acumen, negotiation skills, and comfort dealing with ambiguity in a fast-paced environment.
  4. Significant hands-on experience working with suppliers in China (mainland), including deep understanding of local business practices, manufacturing culture, and regulatory environment.
  5. Experience working with American or Western companies as a customer or intermediary.
  6. Strong technical background in precision manufacturing processes, particularly Metal Injection Molding (MIM), Insert Molding, Progressive Die Stamping, Micro-coax / Micro-twinax cable manufacturing, and Automation Integration.
  7. Competent in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint).
Preferred Experience / Desired Skills:
  1. Proven success scaling high-volume suppliers in China for electronics, automotive, or medical device components.
  2. Experience with advanced manufacturing technologies, process validation (PPAP, FAI), and quality systems (ISO 9001, IATF 16949 preferred).
  3. Direct experience managing cost, quality, and delivery improvement projects at supplier facilities in China.
Education:
  1. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Manufacturing, Materials preferred), Business, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
Training required:
  1. On-the-job training as appropriate.
Languages: English and Mandarin (fluent spoken and written proficiency required)
